A courageous, loving, and optimistic man who was beloved by many, Ismail lived a long and happy life despite battling ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) for more than 50 years. Sadly, Ismail passed away from acute cardio-pulmonary arrest and pneumonia, secondary to ALS, on December 22, 2020.

“I was happy and in love with my wife and loved our family,” Ismail once said when asked how he wanted to be remembered after he died.

Family and friends gathered on Zoom on Sunday, April 18, 2021, for a joyful and loving event that celebrated Ismail and his inspiring life. Cheryl presented in words and pictures the story of her love for Ismail and the active, happy, and fulfilling life the couple shared for 53 years. Family members, friends, home care agencies, and some of the nurses who took care of Ismail at home, shared stories about their experiences as well as their love for Ismail. Suzanne Klasen shared special memories and wonderful entertainment.

Fred Fisher, President and CEO, The ALS Association Golden West Chapter, gave a moving and memorable presentation about Ismail’s activities spreading ALS awareness and raising money for research for treatments and a cure as well as for support to help those living with ALS.

Emcee Randy Kort and his assistant, Jaimee, brought joy and professionalism to the event and ensured that the celebration was uplifting, inspiring, and ran smoothly.
